Townsville – Hostel
Reef Lodge is an older style hostel and was built back in the early 1960’s and largely catered to the Stevedore wharf workers that travelled to Townsville for the seasonal work each year leaving behind families and friends for up to 8 months to work loading and unloading ships in what is North Queenslands largest port. These workers would travel from the likes of Brisbane and Melbourne and stay at what was then called Carmen House, named after the daughter of the original owner who built a large portion of the current buildings on the property. Later in the 70’s and early 80’s there was a change and the managment moved into a new direction which was the backpacking market when it was in its infancy. In the 90’s the property was sold again and was not well looked after and then in 2001 was purchased by the current owners who have spent many years refurbishing and making the Reef Lodge what it is today.
Things To See
So your looking for things to do in Townsville, we have divided the “Things to See and Do” in
“Townsville” and “Magnetic Island” so you have a good idea of what you can do in the area. Some of these attractions include free and paid for activities. As well we have given a brief description of “Other towns” in surrounding areas.
Things to do in Townsville, which is the unofficial Capital of North Queensland, was founded by “Melton Black” back in 1864. At the centre of Townsville is Mount Cootharinga, more commonly known as Castle Hill. This distinctive natural feature makes an awesome backdrop to Townsville city. There is a road up the hill which was constructed in 1935 – 1936 and during the Second World War the hill was used for communications and observations. A search light was constructed half way up the hill and a pill box was built to house a machine gun, similar to the one situated on Magnetic Island.
Magnetic Island, QLD
Magnetic Island has a laid-back charm and beauty that makes it one of the great budget holiday destinations off the north Queensland coast. Although the island is only eight kilometres from Townsville, (20 minutes by fast ferry), it is a world apart from the bustling north Queensland capital. About 2500 permanent residents live in secluded pockets on the 5184ha island, two-thirds of which is protected by National Park.

At Reef Lodge, we like to help others where we can, and we keep a donations box at Reception to collect money to help those whose life circumstances are less fortunate than ours. We have been assisting Kusala Projects which is a charitable organisation set up and run by Australians to provide education for children in India. The establishment of a school, offering classes for children who would otherwise have no chance of an education, has seen an enthusiastic response. To read more about Kusala Projects please visit Kusala Projects. If you too are able to help, you can make an online donation, via paypal, on the Kusala website. Remember, even the smallest amount you can give, makes a huge difference to someone in need. We have also donated and sent money to Africa. Vietnam, Sri Lanka, Laos, Cambodia India and many other countries to help out charitable causes. Most of these can be seen on our wall in our reception area.
