Camp Counselors Russia
Summer Camp – A Great Russian Tradition
Every summer thousands of children head off for camps across Russia, from the shores of Lake Baikal to the beaches of the Black Sea. Each camp has its own philosophy, but all provide children a place to relax while having fun in an outdoor setting. In many ways, these camps resemble those in the United States and Canada. They are usually located in rural settings, miles away from the nearest town. Typically, a camp will have a large dining hall, crafts, sports buildings, and dormitories. Children usually come for sessions lasting 10 to 28 days. Many camp activities take place in the beautiful Russian countryside, often by a lake or river, which provides a glorious setting for swimming, boating and canoeing. Other activities may include theatre, land sports, arts, crafts, dance, and the performing arts.

“Although it has been a while since I dealt with CCUSA – I will recommend and praise this professional organisation continuously. I was placed at New Jersey Camp Jaycee, a special needs camp back in 2006. It was one of the most rewarding experiences of my life!
I encourage everyone I know to apply for camp positions and namely through CCUSA. From the friendly staff, to the excellent interview process, information sessions and so forth – it was truly amazing. So THANK YOU! Camp was amazing and I have made so many lifelong friends from this experience also.”

“From friendly and comfortable pre camp interviews, to always having an answer to the millions of silly questions i had and then sharing my excitement at being placed CCUSA is there for every step of your camp journey. I can’t thank them enough for the most amazing opportunity and all the effort they put in to make sure every applicant was placed and happy. Now that camp has finished there’s not a day that goes by where i don’t think about the singing, the crazy antics, the long hours and wish i was doing it all over again. Thankyou CCUSA!”

“I spent this summer working as a unit counselor at Camp River Ranch hiding away near the Cascade Mountains in Washington State. Mine too was a girl scout camp and having never been a girl guide in my life, I LOVED THIS PLACE! Each week brought about something different. Our girls came for one week sessions so I would go from having the 5 and 6 year old Brownies who liked nothing more than playing in the dirt making mud castles all day to the next week taking 8- 10 year old Juniors on an overnight excursion to the zoo to another week taking 11-13 year old cadets on a 3 day back-country hiking trip where my co-counselor and I had no contact with the outside world, we were responsible 200% for the safety and enjoyment of these girls. I was also lucky enough to spend time with the CITs (Counselors in Training) and hear their stories from attending camp their entire childhood. These girls are truly inspiring!
I learnt so much about myself this summer and whilst acting as a mentor, instructor and friend to girls from all different backgrounds, I also got to build my skills and participate in all camp activities. I became certified in small craft safety so I was able to instruct canoeing and kayaking on my own and I became excellent at chopping wood and starting campfires though out the summer!
We had a different theme week every week and my camp did a great job at providing a cultural exchange to both the staff and campers alike through our holiday week themed dinners and our international week activities.
I have so many favourite memories about camp that I could probably write a book but I’ll narrow it down to 4 for now: 1. the look of pride and excitement on a campers face when through my encouragement they achieved something they said they couldn’t, 2. the laugh I had when a camper I had for a previous week spotted me from the other side of the meadow or dining hall and ran at me screaming my name before tackling me to the ground, 3. the satisfaction of the girls as my entire unit plotted to push me fully clothed into the lake and 4. the true friendships I made with my co-counselors and fellow staff from all around the world – there was certainly never a dull moment with camp counselors around.
Friends back home ask me how camp was and no one word can adequately describe my summer. When they ask, I just start talking …and I don’t stop!!. I am counting down the days until I return next year.”
